Turning Complex Science Into a Clear Biotech Investor Story
For biotech companies, a corporate presentation has a difficult job to do. It needs to communicate sophisticated science with enough depth to establish credibility, but without asking the audience to work too hard to understand why that science matters.
That was the challenge facing a biotech startup developing a novel therapeutic approach for central nervous system (CNS) diseases. As the company was working to raise a financing round, its team found that the existing non-confidential corporate deck wasn’t landing with investors as intended. The science was compelling, but the story was difficult to follow. Slides contained more detail than audiences needed, and complex scientific illustrations often tried to communicate too much at once.
The company partnered with RainCastle to refine and elevate its investor narrative through streamlined messaging and custom design.
The Process
We began with a discovery session with the company’s leadership team to understand the science, therapeutic approach, business story, and investor narrative they wanted to communicate. Just as importantly, we wanted to understand where audiences were getting stuck. What questions were investors asking? Which concepts required repeated explanation?
From there, we conducted a deep audit of the deck. Rather than reinventing the company’s investor narrative from scratch, we focused on making their current narrative clearer and more compelling. Before rewriting individual slides, we stepped back to examine the story as a whole, reorganizing content where needed to create a more intuitive progression.
Then we went slide by slide, establishing the essential message each needed to communicate. We streamlined copy, removed scientific details that weren’t necessary to move the story forward, and identified places where additional context could help audiences connect the dots.
Once the narrative was in place, our science writer and designer worked closely together to translate it visually. Rather than treating writing and design as sequential steps (write the content, then make it look good), we approached them as an iterative process. What does the audience need to understand from this slide? Which information belongs in the copy, and which is better communicated visually? What can we remove without losing scientific accuracy?
We applied the same thinking to the company’s scientific illustrations. Existing diagrams contained significant scientific detail, but that detail could obscure the takeaway. We rebuilt key visuals around the specific concept each slide needed to communicate, eliminating any unnecessary elements.
The Result
The final presentation gave the company a clearer, more sophisticated way to communicate its story to investors. Complex science remained scientifically substantive, but audiences had a more intuitive path from the problem to the company’s approach and its broader potential.
