Medical Device Website Design in Action: The OP Specialty Bracing Story

Designing a website for a medical device company often means solving several challenges at once.

Healthcare professionals may be looking for detailed product and clinical information. Patients and caregivers need educational content they can understand. Sales and marketing teams need a platform that supports campaigns and lead generation. And internal teams need a website they can update as products, locations and resources evolve.

Those challenges were central to our work with OP Specialty Bracing, the specialty bracing division of OrthoPediatrics.

What began as a website redesign became a much broader digital strategy project spanning audience experience, content, SEO, medical device marketing, WordPress development and custom functionality.

The Challenge: One Medical Device Website, Many Different Audiences

OP Specialty Bracing specializes in pediatric orthotics, prosthetics and specialty bracing. Its website therefore needed to support several very different audiences, including healthcare professionals, patients and families.

These visitors do not necessarily arrive with the same questions.

A healthcare professional may be looking for information about a specific brace, treatment approach or educational resource. A parent may be trying to understand a child’s condition or learn what to expect from treatment. Another visitor may simply need to find the nearest specialty clinic.

One of the first goals of the project was to create clearer pathways for each audience while still presenting OP Specialty Bracing as one cohesive organization.

That is an important consideration in medical device website design more broadly. A strong website has to provide enough technical depth for professional audiences without making the experience inaccessible to patients and caregivers.

Please see below for how we chose to organize the navigation menu allowing audience groups to browse to information most relavent to them while also keeping the Pediatric Products menu item available for all audiences.

Starting Medical Device Website Design With Strategy

Before beginning visual design, we worked closely with stakeholders across OP Specialty Bracing to understand its audiences, priorities, products, clinical services and long-term plans.

Our discovery process included:

  • Stakeholder and audience workshops
  • Competitive website review
  • Information architecture planning
  • Content inventory and strategy
  • SEO and keyword research
  • User experience planning
  • Messaging and copywriting
  • Planning for future products, locations and educational resources

This strategy-first process helped ensure that design decisions were driven by how visitors actually needed to use the website rather than simply by aesthetics.

For medical device companies, this becomes especially important as the volume and complexity of information grows. Product information, clinical education, patient resources, locations and supporting materials all need to be organized in a way that feels intuitive rather than overwhelming.

Using SEO Research to Inform the Website

Search engine optimization was incorporated at the beginning of the project rather than added after the website had already been designed.

We conducted extensive keyword research around OP Specialty Bracing’s major areas of expertise, including scoliosis, clubfoot, pediatric orthotics, prosthetics, lower-limb conditions, hip dysplasia and other pediatric conditions.

The goal was not simply to identify keywords to place into page titles.

The research helped us understand the language patients, parents and healthcare professionals were actually using when looking for information. That gave us valuable insight into:

  • Which topics deserved dedicated pages
  • Where additional educational content could be useful
  • How information should be grouped
  • How product and condition content could support one another
  • Where OP Specialty Bracing had opportunities to build greater search visibility over time

Early results have been encouraging, with the new site beginning to gain stronger visibility across several of the priority topic areas we identified during the research process. While SEO is an ongoing effort, the initial performance is a positive indication that the combination of technical SEO, content strategy and a more intentional site structure is helping OP Specialty Bracing build greater search presence.

This is one of the areas where website strategy and medical device marketing increasingly overlap. Search data can help shape not only SEO, but also the site’s content strategy and information architecture.

Creating Different Experiences for Healthcare Professionals and Families

A major part of the project was creating clearer experiences for OP Specialty Bracing’s professional and patient audiences.

The primary website provides access to products, services, clinic information and professional resources, while a dedicated patient and family resource experience makes educational information easier to discover.

Separating these pathways allowed us to provide greater depth without forcing every visitor through the same content experience.

It also created an expandable foundation for patient education.

As OP Specialty Bracing develops new resources, videos and condition-specific information, the organization now has a clearer structure for publishing and connecting that content.

Building a Stronger Local Search Foundation

OP Specialty Bracing also operates a growing network of specialty clinics.

That meant the website had to do more than describe the organization and its products. It needed to help families connect with care.

We redesigned the clinic experience to make individual locations easier to discover and navigate while creating a stronger SEO foundation for location-specific searches.

Clinic pages could then serve two purposes: helping an existing visitor find the information they need while also creating additional opportunities for OP Specialty Bracing to appear when families search for relevant pediatric orthotic and bracing services in their area.

For medical device and healthcare organizations with multiple locations, that connection between website UX and local SEO can be especially important.

Making the Product Experience More Interactive

The project also included development of a custom WordPress product configurator.

The tool allows patients and families to explore customization options for select braces, including available patterns and product-specific colors.

For a pediatric medical device company, this type of functionality serves a different purpose than a typical B2B product configurator.

It helps make the experience more approachable and engaging for children and families while still supporting the broader product experience.

We also built administrative controls so the OP Specialty Bracing team could manage customization options without requiring ongoing developer involvement.

Building a Website the Marketing Team Could Actually Manage

Another important part of the project happened behind the scenes.

The new website was developed in WordPress with reusable templates and structured content that make it easier for the OP Specialty Bracing marketing team to maintain and expand the site.

That flexibility is particularly important for growing medical device companies.

New products launch. Clinical resources change. New locations open. Marketing campaigns create new content needs.

A website should support that growth instead of becoming an obstacle to it.

Our work therefore included not only development and content migration, but also training so the OP Specialty Bracing team could confidently manage routine updates internally.

The Result: More Than a Medical Device Website Redesign

The result was not simply a new visual design.

The project gave OP Specialty Bracing a more scalable digital platform built around its audiences, content and future growth.

Key improvements included:

  • Clearer pathways for healthcare professionals, patients and families
  • A stronger SEO and content foundation
  • Improved clinic discovery and local search opportunities
  • Expanded patient and family education
  • A scalable WordPress content management system
  • Custom interactive product functionality
  • Greater control for the internal marketing team
  • A structure designed to accommodate future products, locations and resources

The website also created a stronger foundation for ongoing digital marketing.

Rather than treating launch as the end of the project, OP Specialty Bracing can continue using search data, keyword tracking and audience needs to identify where new content can strengthen visibility and support its customers.

What This Project Illustrates About Medical Device Website Design

One of the biggest lessons from this project is that an effective medical device website has to do more than present products attractively.

It has to connect complex information with very different audiences.

It should help healthcare professionals quickly access the depth they need while making important information understandable to patients and caregivers. It should support search visibility and marketing campaigns while remaining manageable for the people responsible for keeping it current.

That requires coordination across strategy, UX, content, SEO, design and development.

For medical device companies, the best website projects are therefore rarely just web design projects. They are an important part of a broader medical device marketing strategy.

At RainCastle, we bring those disciplines together as a medical device marketing agency, helping medical device and life sciences organizations communicate complex ideas clearly, create better digital experiences and build websites that can continue supporting their marketing as they grow.
